Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery

Our small 21-bed unit is team oriented and focused on hands-on, quality patient care.

We have close relationships with one another and we depend on each other get the job done. We work with a Nurse Practitioner, a Case Manager and a PT to meet the needs of our patients.

We provide new staff with a 6-week orientation specific to our unit. We are run by protocol and we have a unique relationship with the Cardiothoracic Surgeons who are very supportive and involved.

Our patient population is primarily cardiothoracic and vascular surgery patients mixed with a variety of surgical patients, most of whom need cardiac monitoring.

Nurses have the opportunity to advance through the clinical ladder or they can become Care Coordinators, Nurse Educators or Assistant Nurse Managers. We have an active co-management council, co-chaired by our Assistant Nurse Manager and Nurse Educator, which focuses on quality improvement and clinical practice.

Orientation

Our 6 to10-week unit orientation begins after your hospital orientation. Its length will be determined by your needs and previous experience. Your orientation will include "field trips" to OR, SICU, Cardiology, Cardiac Rehab and time with a C/T Nursing Clinician. We will provide you with an 80-hour Cardiology/Cardiothoracic Core program, which includes EKG and telemetry training.
