Emergency Department

Our 43-bed Emergency Department is a Level I Trauma Center that serves both adult and pediatric medically ill and injured patients.

We have a very large catchment area and see all ages, from infants to elderly patients. We evaluate sexual assaults and have a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner.

We are located in a new, state-of-the-art facility with trauma elevators to the OR suites, a nearby 64-slice CT scanner and bedside electronic charting.

Our physicians are very supportive and we work cooperatively with attendings. Our Medical Director's office is located in the same area as our Nurse Manager's office. We are supported by highly skilled EDT's.

Our nurses have basic life support (BLS), advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) , and pediatric advanced life support (PALS) certification. We highly recommend trauma nurse course certification (TNCC), certified emergency nurse certification (CEN), advanced trauma life support (ATLS) certification and the emergency nurse pediatric course (ENPC). We provide certificate reimbursement and CEN reimbursement for certification. We are very supportive of education and professional growth.

Orientation

The Emergency Department orientation is individualized to meet the needs of the preceptee. The first 3 days are spent with the Nurse Educator, reviewing policies and procedures, learning the physical layout of the department, reviewing ALERTS (stroke, STEMI, sick child, trauma), flow sheets, charting, IV and blood draws, conscious sedations, and more. You will be scheduled with one or two primary preceptors for approximately 4 to 6 weeks, depending on your experience. Communication with the Nurse Educator, preceptee & preceptors, as well as the rest of the Leadership Team is ongoing.

You will only come off orientation when you, your preceptors, the Nurse Educator and the Leadership Team all agree that you are ready. We all understand that you will need to continually learn, and the supportive environment does not end with your formal orientation. We do evaluations at 3 and 6 months, to reassess your learning needs and evaluate your progress.

Less experienced hires will participate in a 16 to 20 week internship, which includes didactic and clinical rotations.
