Maternity

Our 35-bed maternity unit provides care for a wide variety of antepartum, postpartum and newborn patients. We are not a Labor and Delivery unit, but a maternity unit. We see 2,200 patients each year.

Most of our patient population is healthy. With those patients we focus on education to prevent issues in the future. We teach mothers how to breast feed, and teach families about baby care. In addition to our predominantly healthy patients, we take care of sick mothers who are experiencing complications. We care for high-risk antepartum patients, pre-term patients and those who have experienced pregnancy loss. We offer a great opportunity for nurses who want to care for a larger population of high-risk patients. Our staff is close-knit, friendly and supportive. We offer you camaraderie and a great environment. Our nurses have the opportunity to advance through the clinical ladder or they can become Care Coordinators, Nurses Educators or Assistant Nurse Managers.

We actively support our nurses' development through conference attendance and other continuing education opportunities. We also have an active unit-based Shared Governance council.

Orientation

RN orientation is a year-long process, with the first 10 weeks dedicated to hospital orientation, systems-level nursing orientation and unit-level clinical experience and didactics. The Nurse Educator is very active in the orientation process. During your first 10 weeks, you will be assigned to work with preceptors to learn the routine of the unit, master organizational skills and become confident with the computer applications related to nursing documentation. After the hospital orientation we do a 4-week unit orientation. If you are qualified you may also be cross-oriented to the Birthing Center.
