Medical ICU

We are a 21-bed medical/cardiac intensive care unit staffed exclusively by a team of critical care nurses, many of whom are CCRN certified.

Our unit is very active. As a Level I Trauma Center and academic medical center, we see significant patient turnover. Daily multidisciplinary rounds unite the entire care team and provide daily learning experiences. Our physicians encourage our active participation in rounds and treat us as valued professionals.

We have a culture of teamwork. We are all here to help each other, whether we are saving a patient's life or helping a patient die peacefully.

We are flexible and strive to give our nurses the opportunity to improve their skills and float between the medical and surgical intensive care units.

We are constantly changing, constantly improving, assisted by our Nurse Educator. Our Practice Council, which includes new and experienced nurses, continually assesses our processes and our process changes start with them. Communication across the unit is the key to our success.

Medical ICU

Orientation

We provide a 5-month orientation program for new RNs without critical care experience and a 1 to 2 month orientation for experienced RNs depending on the type of ICU they worked in previously. All of our RNs must be advanced cardiac life support (ACLS)-certified. When you are ready to be oriented to the PICU we provide pediatric advanced life support (PALS) certification and a PICU course with orientation. Currently, RNs may care for one adult patient and one PICU patient, depending on the care required.
