Neurosciences and Surgery

Our fast-paced 25-bed progressive care unit is a great place to experience multidisciplinary teamwork. You will work closely with our Neurology Nurse Practitioner as well as residents, case managers, SLPs, OTs and PTs. We have a dynamic staff. Supported by our exceptional Nurse Educator, we use evidence-based practice protocols and provide the most up-to-date care for our patients. Our 3-bed Neuro step-down unit with cardiac monitoring provides the opportunity to care for higher-acuity patients.

We offer extensive opportunities to learn. Our diverse patient population includes both short and long-term patients encompassing neurology, neurosurgery, gynecologic surgery, ENT, eye, cesium implants, iodine patients, TB patients and adult Cystic Fibrosis patients. We manage lumbar drains, ventricular drains and feeding tubes.

Our nurses have the opportunity to advance through the clinical ladder or they can become Nurse Educators or Assistant Nurse Managers. All nurses are invited to participate in our Practice Council or our Scheduling Committee, which does peer scheduling.

Orientation

RN orientation is a year-long process, with the first 14 weeks dedicated to hospital, systems-level nursing orientation and unit-level clinical experience and didactics. The Nurse Educator is very active in the orientation process. During the first 14 weeks, the new RN is assigned to work with preceptors to learn the routine of the unit, master organizational skills and become confident with the computer applications related to nursing documentation.
