Surgical ICU

Our 21-bed unit is made up of a great team of nurses. We rely on each other and support each other.

Our patient population includes adult and pediatric patients. We have post-op coronary artery bypass grafts (CABG), valves, traumas, kidney and pancreas transplants, general surgery, vascular surgery, and neurosurgery patients. Our 4-bed PICU cares for medical and surgical patients.

Our 20-week critical care internship program includes online courses, individual and group sessions with educators, online quizzes and Clinical Competencies. Our Clinical Educator is very involved and accessible.

As a Level I Trauma center, we see everything there is to see; you'll never be bored.

Nurses have the opportunity to advance through the clinical ladder or they can become Care Coordinators, Nurse Educators or Assistant Nurse Managers.

We have an active Quality Improvement Committee and Pediatric and Adult educators. We are invested in Continuing Education -- locally, regionally and nationally.

Orientation

We provide a 5-month orientation program for new RNs without critical care experience and a 1 to 2 month orientation for experienced RNs depending on the type of ICU they worked in previously. All of our RNs must be advanced cardiac life support (ACLS)-certified. When you are ready to be oriented to the PICU we provide pediatric advanced life support (PALS) certification and a PICU course with orientation. Currently, RNs may care for one adult patient and one PICU patient, depending on the care required.
